Every autumn, the historic Hie Shrine in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, transforms into a glowing wonderland for the annual Momiji Festival. Celebrating the beauty of Japan's seasonal foliage, the event combines vivid natural color, gentle light, and traditional performances to create an unforgettable experience in the heart of Hida Takayama.
As the evenings grow crisp, the shrine grounds are illuminated with hundreds of lanterns and 250 softly glowing Japanese umbrellas, highlighting the deep red and gold hues of the maple trees. The scene feels almost otherworldly, as the ancient torii gate and centuries-old trees are bathed in warm light, blending nature and tradition in perfect harmony.
Adding to the atmosphere are a variety of live performances that take place throughout the festival period. Visitors can enjoy traditional lion dances, taiko drumming, harp and choir performances, and even projection mapping displays, filling the peaceful autumn nights with music and movement. Each evening offers something a little different, inviting guests to return more than once to experience the changing rhythm of the festival.
Please note that for 2025, the event runs on selected days only, which are November 1st (Sat) to November 3rd (Mon, national holiday), November 8th (Sat), 9th (Sun), 15th (Sat), and 16th (Sun).
