I often wondered whether a visit to Narita was worth the trip. "There are temples in Tokyo" I would think, "and there are Japanese Gardens here." I never bothered to make the trip, assuming it would be a waste of my time - until my flight was cancelled at the last minute. Blessed with an enforced stopover, it was the perfect chance to take a look around. What a place! The stroll from the station was beautiful (if you ignore the touristy shops on the way), and the temple complex and gardens were superb. I even had the chance to observe Monks carrying out the Goma Fire Ritual - an unforgottable experience. It was a wonderful stop over, but easily worth the trip from Tokyo if you fancy a relaxing day and a look at 'Old Japan.'
