In a city known for its centuries-old temples and traditional arts, a modern addition is set to make waves this fall. TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto, a new permanent immersive art museum, will open in Minami Ward as part of Kyoto’s Southeast Area Development Project. The museum promises to transform how visitors engage with art, blurring the lines between technology, nature, and human perception.

True to TeamLab’s signature style, Biovortex Kyoto is designed to immerse visitors entirely into dynamic works of art that respond to and evolve with their surroundings. The museum will feature numerous newly developed pieces, including several that will be exhibited in Japan for the first time.

One of the standout installations is "Massless Amorphous Sculpture", a floating, shifting form created from soap bubbles suspended in air. It exists only through the interaction of water, soap, and airflow—what TeamLab calls a "High Order Sculpture."

Another centerpiece is "Massless Sun and Dark Sun," where visitors interact with glowing orbs of light that seem to respond to touch, though they exist only in the viewer’s perception. These cognitive sculptures don’t exist in a traditional, material sense, but are instead shaped by each individual’s awareness and interaction.

Biovortex Kyoto isn’t just about the cool visuals, going a step further to explore philosophical questions like the meaning of existence and how perception and the world around us shapes reality. Installations like "Morphing Continuum" and "Traces of Life" offer large-scale, living environments made up of light, movement, and time. Even if the elements change, the artworks persist as unified entities, reinforcing TeamLab’s exploration of continuity and transformation.

The new museum is part of a larger vision by Kyoto City to foster creative urban development centered on art, culture, and youth engagement. The project brings together local companies from Kyoto and Osaka, making Biovortex Kyoto a hub for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
